On November 6, a reporter from The Paper learned from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission that the 2024 Global 6G Development Conference will be held in Songjiang District, Shanghai, from November 13 to 14. This year’s conference theme is “Leading a New Journey, Looking to the Frontier of 6G Standards.” The event will showcase China’s latest achievements in 6G (sixth-generation mobile communication technology) innovation, attracting innovative companies in mobile communications from around the world to come to China and Shanghai. The goal is to bring together upstream and downstream resources in the industry chain, boost cutting-edge 6G technology research and development, standard formulation, and future industry cultivation.

Each generation of mobile communications emerges approximately every decade, and 6G represents the technological upgrade following 5G. It’s understood that the standard-setting process for 6G is divided into two phases: from 2025 to 2027, global 6G standard research will take place; from 2027 to 2029, the first version of the standard will be developed; 6G is expected to enter the commercial stage around 2030.

Wang Zhiqin, Vice President of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, stated, “6G development will increasingly adapt to the AI era, serving AI needs. Furthermore, it will be a challenge to design the 6G architecture to meet the specific business requirements of AI applications, such as those in the B2B and B2C markets.”

The conference will feature five main segments: keynote speeches, global 6G organization presentations, roundtable discussions, major announcements, and thematic speeches. Keynote speeches will gather leading experts in China’s 6G field, focusing on the latest innovations. The global 6G organization presentations will include representatives from the 3GPP Technical Committee and industry bodies from the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South Korea, who will share the latest developments in 6G. The roundtable discussions will deeply explore “6G Technology Standards Outlook,” with participation from the 6G Promotion Group and Shanghai Chuangyuan Xinke. Major announcements will include the latest 6G research results and key technology test outcomes, providing guidance and reference for global 6G development. Representatives from major operators, including China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, and international companies such as Huawei, ZTE, China Information and Communication Technologies Group, Qualcomm, Ericsson, and Nokia, will deliver thematic speeches on topics like integrated development, technological innovation, and standards outlook. Shanghai-based Yuanxin Company will also deliver a presentation, highlighting Shanghai’s innovations in 6G satellite internet and unique industrial features.

Qu Wei, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, emphasized that 6G, as a more advanced next-generation mobile communication system, is characterized by foresight, leadership, and driving potential. It will surpass traditional communications through visions of sensing and communication integration, AI-communication fusion, and integrated space-ground networking, fostering disruptive technologies and applications, driving strategic products and services, and shaping future industries, making it a strategic priority in global technology.

Shanghai has a solid foundation for developing future 6G industries, with a comprehensive mobile communications and satellite innovation industry chain, a nationally leading integrated circuit industry, strong competitiveness in artificial intelligence, and an abundance of R&D talent in communications. The city is rich in application scenarios in fields like autonomous driving, embodied intelligence, smart manufacturing, low-altitude economy, and rehabilitation for elderly care. In the future, Shanghai will align with national strategic goals for leading 6G development, strengthen cooperation between ministries and the city, coordinate city and district efforts, and collaborate among various government departments. It will focus on “chip components and module systems” to strengthen the foundation, “satellite connectivity and instrumentation” to enhance strengths, and “new terminals and new access” to explore new paths. Through deeper integration of 6G and AI, Shanghai will accelerate breakthroughs in disruptive technologies and strategic product R&D, establish model demonstration scenarios, foster leading tech companies, promote industry clustering, strengthen support for essential resources, and innovate in systems and mechanisms, aiming to build a national leading 6G future industry innovation system and make Shanghai a globally influential 6G innovation center.

Notable guests at this conference will include Wu Hequan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Zhou Bowen, Director of the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory; and Wen Ku, President of the China Communications Standards Association, who will share insights into 6G innovation. International representatives include Puneet Jain, Chair of the 3GPP SA (Service and Architecture), Colin Willock, Chair of the European 6G-IA Council, KyungHi Chang, Chair of the South Korea 6G Forum Executive Committee, and Seiji Nishioka, Secretary General of Japan’s XGMF.
